An introduction to the staff and their experience

Chairman of the Research Committee of Excavations, Robin Birley has over 50 years of excavation experience on the site of Vindolanda (as well as directing numerous other excavations at other sites such as Housesteads). He is also responsible for the excavations of most of the remains visible on the site today. The research Director is perhaps best known for his remarkable discovery of the Vindolanda writing tablets in the 1970s, 1980s and early 1990s.
